Hamza Abdullahi: The Air Vice Marshal Who Built Aso Rock Presidential Villa

Born on March 2, 1945, Hamza Abdullahi rose through the ranks of the Nigerian Air Force to become an Air Vice Marshal—its third-highest rank—before retiring in 1988. His legacy, however, extends far beyond military service.

From 1984 to 1985, during the military regime of General Muhammadu Buhari, he served as the Military Governor of Kano State—then comprising today’s Kano and Jigawa states. But his most defining national role came under General Ibrahim Babangida, who appointed him Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in 1986.

Tasked with the critical mission of relocating Nigeria’s seat of government from Lagos to Abuja, Abdullahi had two major mandates: to oversee the movement of XX% of federal ministries to Abuja by 1990 and to ensure the city was ready to function as the new capital.

Under his watch, key districts such as Maitama and Asokoro took shape. He supervised the construction of major federal landmarks, including the Abuja City Gate, military barracks, and most notably, the Aso Rock Presidential Villa—now the official residence of Nigeria’s President.

Hamza Abdullahi passed away in 2019, leaving behind a legacy etched into the very foundation of Nigeria’s capital city.
