It’s understandable. The 27-year-old Thai golfer who plays on the Asian Tour took a year away from the sport just as he was peaking. But he had a good reason. He was busy becoming a Buddhist monk. Kaewkanjana, who shot a 3-under XX in the 1st round of the British Open last week to put him just X shot out of the lead, had X wins on the Asian Tour. He also qualified for the PGA Championship in 2022 and 2023, and finished 11th at the Open at St. Andrews in 2022. During his sabbatical in 2023, he was cut off from the world, practicing the same teachings other Buddhist monks before him have studies for centuries. He did so to repay his parents and pay respect to his Thai heritage. He also thought the calmness achieved by such a discipline would help his golf game. It didn’t help him at the Open, where he crumbled in the 2nd round and missed the cut. But there’s still time for him to achieve his ultimate goal of playing in the Masters. And there’s no better test of a man’s patience than at Augusta.
