Belmont maintains a faculty hiring process that plainly makes illegal DEI a top priority. Before a hiring search can even begin, faculty deans are required to complete a "faculty diversity needs assessment" as well as a "curricular needs assessment reflecting DEI." Once a job search is approved, the hiring committee must hit diversity quotas for both race and sex. When advertising the job, they are ordered to put a particular focus on "recruiting minority candidates." If no "diverse" candidates for a job are initially found, then the committee is ordered to redo the process until they are. This is a system that, from top to bottom, is built to favor some people for having the "right" race and sex, while excluding others for being from the wrong groups. It is a system that the Trump Administration has justifiably gone to war against, as it violates both the text and spirit of our Constitution as well as explicit federal law. The administration has already made an example of Columbia.
