My thoughts on the Model Y after a month @elonmusk @SawyerMerritt @WholeMarsBlog

I was driving a Ford Ranger Lariat for the last year - nice midsize pickup truck and now fully appreciate that style after making fun of it / country music. It was exactly what you'd expect: elevated ride, solid build, reliable performance.

The Tesla Model Y is the complete opposite in almost every way; electric, software-first, quiet, minimalist. I’d been thinking about making the switch for a while, and this year, I finally did after telling myself the battery anxiety can't really be too much of an issue anymore.

Part of the reason was environmental. Going electric is better. But it wasn’t just that, it’s also a better experience bc the car is quieter and the acceleration is instant (pretty sure I have mild whiplash). You don’t need to rev anything, you just think, push the pedal and go, which when turning, changing lanes etc is actually much safer. And once you get used to it, it makes traditional driving feel a little outdated.

After a month, here’s what stands out:

Pros:
- Instant acceleration; quick off the line with no lag
- Quieter cabin with no engine noise / driving feels smoother
- No more gas station stops or oil changes
- Home charging on a 220V outlet is easy and cheap (10pm-6am)
- Full Self-Driving is weird at first but then awesome on highways etc. Still an odd feeling and a learning curve - it was fun but I wont pay $8k for it
- Clean, minimalist interior with the better touch screen interface on the market. Basically an very useful iPad
- Surprisingly decent trunk space for a smaller vehicle
- Software updates keep improving the experience
- No maintenance headaches so far

Cons (or just differences):
- Lower ride height than a pickup which just takes time to get used to
- Minimalism can feel sparse if you’re used to physical knobs/buttons - old habits
- You still need to stay fully alert even with FSD on which I guess I legally required but then you oddly get bored just sitting there and you cant do anything... paradox
- FSD hits every pothole etc and when you disengage it's kind of jarring

Either way, so far so good!
