RNC Chair Michael Whatley to Launch Senate Bid in North Carolina with Trump’s Support.

Michael Whatley, current RNC chair and Trump ally, is entering the 2026 U.S. Senate race in North Carolina. Backed by Trump, Whatley may quickly become the GOP’s leading candidate, especially after Lara Trump opted out of the race.

Whatley’s political roots run deep—he served as chief of staff to Sen. Elizabeth Dole and led North Carolina’s GOP during Trump’s campaigns. He became RNC chair in early 2024 with Trump’s support and is expected to resign soon to focus on his Senate run.
