Instead, he shot up to XXXXXX feet, drifting into commercial airspace near LAX. Freezing and out of his depth, he stunned pilots and air traffic controllers who saw a guy in a flying chair. After XX minutes, he popped some balloons to descend, got tangled in power lines, and cut electricity to a Long Beach neighborhood—but walked away unscathed. The FAA fined him for breaking aviation rules, but he became a folk hero, appearing on talk shows and inspiring pop culture. When asked why, he said, “A man can’t just sit around.” His crazy flight is still a legendary tale of backyard aviation.
