Elon Musk says Tesla may face a few challenging quarters ahead as the electric vehicle market adjusts to changing incentives and rising costs.

On the company’s earnings call, Musk pointed to the phasing out of federal EV tax credits and new tariff pressures as key concerns heading into late 2025 and early 2026.

Tesla confirmed that many of its models will lose eligibility for the $XXXXX tax credit by the end of this quarter. At the same time, tariffs linked to former President Trump’s policies have added $XXX million in costs, mostly hitting the company’s automotive business.

Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja warned that the full financial hit will be felt in future quarters due to timing lags in production and sales. Despite these headwinds, Musk remains confident in Tesla’s long-term strategy, particularly around the rollout of autonomous driving at scale.

He believes autonomy could shift the company’s economics significantly in the second half of next year. Meanwhile, analyst Dan Ives suggested Tesla may ultimately benefit from the tax credit changes, as smaller competitors feel more pressure.

Tesla reported $XXXX billion in second quarter revenue, up XX percent from last year but below expectations. Shares slipped more than X percent after hours following the earnings miss.
