Review Summary: The Fantastic Four: First Steps
Rating: 7/10 – Good
Marvel's first family lands on solid ground but doesn’t soar just yet.

Matt Shakman’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps successfully reintroduces Reed Richards (Pedro Pascal), Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby), Johnny Storm (Joseph Quinn), and Ben Grimm (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) to the MCU, offering a charming, heartfelt family drama with retrofuturistic flair. While the characters shine with chemistry and emotional depth—especially Kirby’s standout performance as Sue—the film struggles to deliver the grand spectacle expected of a superhero tentpole.

The narrative cleverly draws parallels between parenting and impending doom via Galactus and his herald, the Silver Surfer (Julia Garner), offering poignant metaphors rather than explosive action. Pascal’s Reed is quietly effective, though a bit subdued, while Johnny and Ben bring levity and warmth, albeit with hints that their stories were trimmed. Paul Walter Hauser’s Mole Man briefly steals the show in a strong supporting role.

Visually, the film boasts slick production design but lacks truly memorable superhero moments. The action is sparse and underwhelming, and despite Giacchino’s rousing score, few sequences leave a lasting impact. Rather than pushing the MCU forward, First Steps opts to build a solid emotional foundation for the Fantastic Four—an admirable goal, but one that might leave fans wanting more scope and stakes.

In short: First Steps is a solid debut, but not yet the bold leap Marvel’s First Family deserves.
