After May 2025, when President Donald Trump was informed by Attorney General Pam Bondi that his name appeared in the Jeffrey Epstein investigative files during a White House meeting, the situation evolved into a contentious issue. 

The Wall Street Journal reported that Trump was told his name, along with those of other high-profile figures, was mentioned in the files, which contained unverified hearsay about individuals who had socialized with Epstein, though no wrongdoing was indicated. 

Despite earlier promises to release the files, the Trump administration, through the Department of Justice, later decided against their public disclosure, a move that sparked backlash from his MAGA supporters and fueled conspiracy theories. 

This decision, made weeks after the May meeting, was framed by officials as based on the unverified nature of the content, though it reversed a campaign pledge and deepened a political crisis, with Trump also filing a libel lawsuit against the Journal over a related story about a supposed birthday card to Epstein.
