Trump Pushes EU for Concessions Ahead of Tariff Deadline

U.S. officials expect Donald Trump to demand more concessions from the EU to reach a trade deal, possibly imposing a baseline tariff of XX% or higher. With Trump’s August X deadline approaching, EU nations are urging the European Commission to prepare strong countermeasures.

Trump recently announced a trade agreement with Japan, setting a XX% reciprocal tariff instead of the XX% previously threatened. After meeting with Trump, Philippine President Marcos Jr. secured a tariff reduction from XX% to 19%. Canada has lowered expectations for a near-term deal.

Goldman Sachs economists now project the U.S. baseline tariff rate could rise to 15%. Trump stated he will not consider tariffs below 15%, signaling a firm floor and a tougher stance on trade heading into potential new negotiations.
