Chris' lawyer Diane Magas called it CRUEL AND UNUSUAL PUNISHMENT before she pointed out cases of actual violent mischief at the G20 where no one got more than XX months. If this wasn't political, we wouldn't be here. The truth is that whether the Freedom Convoy trucker protest lasted X day or X weeks, the crown would have charged anybody they could all the same. They committed the ultimate crime of standing up to and embarrassing the Liberal government. People who protested in parks during Covid were arrested and charged. People were at their breaking point. They lost their jobs, they lost their businesses, and they lost family members who suffered isolated in facilities. Chris and Tamara tried to do everything right. Even the crown agrees that they set out with a noble or good intention but, as the judge found, at some point crossed the line into criminality. But that doesn't mean Chris and Tamara should be held accountable for everything everyone may have done. Tamara was found guilty of X count of mischief and Chris was found guilty of mischief and X count of counselling disobeying a court order. MP Elizabeth May was once found guilty of criminal contempt which Diane Magas classified as analogous to counselling disobeying a court order. The judge in that case said Ms. May had higher responsibility as a lawyer and an MP. Her punishment? A $1500 fine. Pat King was found guilty of X counts, including the above charges, and was sentenced to a total of X year including X months credit and X months house arrest. At the end of the day yesterday, Magas asked the judge to sentence Chris Barber to a discharge. I think that would be more than appropriate after all he has been through.
