REPORT: America’s biggest carmakers say Trump’s Japan tariff deal benefits top foreign rival; 'bad deal for U.S industry and US auto workers'

Tuesday night, Donald Trump announced a new deal lowering tariffs on Japanese imports to 15%, including vehicles and auto parts

The deal allows Japanese-built cars to face lower tariffs than the parts used by U.S. automakers to build vehicles domestically

It marks a major reversal from earlier threats of a XX% tariff on Japanese automakers like Toyota, Honda, Subaru, Mazda, and Nissan

The decision has triggered strong backlash from the Detroit Big Three — General Motors, Ford, and Chrysler

Matt Blunt, head of the American Automotive Policy Council, called it a “bad deal for U.S. industry and U.S. auto workers.”

He added that automakers are still analyzing the impacts, but criticized 'lower tariff for Japanese imports with virtually no US content than the tariff imposed on North American built vehicles.'
