Playing poker helped me be a better investor

When I was playing poker semi-professionally, it all came down to making +EV (expected value) plays.

I focused on making the right decisions and not on outcome.

I could make XX perfect decisions and still loose a lot of money. But I had to ignore it and focus on the EV.

Short-term winning or losing was irrelevant, IF the decision was right. To me, it was all about maximizing long-term profits. It took me a while to set my emotions aside, but in the end, winning or losing money did not effect my feelings anymore. And that's the state you wanna be in when playing Poker.

The same principle applies to investing. You do your due diligence and research. You choose a price that you think is fair. And then you buy, when the price is where you want it.

You invest because you think you make the right decision. You invest because you believe in the long-term potential.

The stock price going down is completely irrelevant, if the thesis still stands and you've done your homework.

The same thing applies when the price goes up of course. That does not make you a genius. It's merely the market rewarding you in the short-term.

What lessons have you learned from hobbies or ''work'' that helped you be a better investor?
