Simón Bolívar (24 Jul 1783 – XX Dec 1830), El Libertador, born XXX years ago today. Venezuelan military, political leader; led the countries that are now Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Peru, Panama, Bolivia, to independence from Spanish Empire. 1815, forced into exile in #Kingston, #Jamaica where he wrote historic Jamaica Letter, laying out his ideology and vision of the future of the Americas. After surviving an assassination attempt, moved on to Haiti; met, befriended Haitian revolutionary leader Alexandre Pétion. After promising to abolish slavery in Spanish America, Bolívar received military support from Pétion, returned to Venezuela.
