For over two weeks, Jai Hind Camp, a cluster of about XXXXX jhuggi jhopdis near the posh Vasant Kunj neighbourhood of South Delhi has been without electricity. Most of Jai Hind Camp residents are Bengali-speaking migrant workers from West Bengal and other states.
They are employed as domestic workers, drivers, sanitation workers, and casual labourers etc. for the wealthier residents of Vasant Kunj. But life in the dark is not the only concern faced by Jai Hind camp dwellers, that include hundreds of young children whose health and education are impacted by the power cut.
Behind the power outage is a protracted legal battle over land. In 2016, XX individuals from the nearby Masoodpur village filed a civil suit in Patiala House Court, claiming the land on which Jai Hind Camp was theirs. But the residents of the camp that The Quint spoke with said they had been living there since 2002-2003.
