It’s true. By today’s standards, thirteen sounds young.

But in colonial Indochina, thirteen wasn’t childhood.

It was resistance.

Children didn’t have the luxury of innocence when their villages were burned and their siblings beheaded.

No one waits to grow up in a war they didn’t start.

Every hand, every heart, every breath was needed to push the French out of our land.

And some of those hands belonged to boys who had already buried more than most adults ever will.

My father wasn’t a soldier because he wanted to be.

He was a child who became a man because empire gave him no other choice.

He stood not just for himself, but for a nation that refused to kneel.

I say this not to justify, but to clarify.

History looks different when you’ve lived it from the ground.
