He had fled to the Honduras, but had returned when his wife Athol was dying of tuberculosis & surrendered soon after she died. Porter was devastated, & seemed to have little to live for, but decided to continue doing the one thing his late wife loved and encouraged, his writing. After his prison sentence, he moved to New York & wrote almost three hundred short stories, some of them classics. The name he adopted, O'Henry, was probably a nod to the Ohio penitentiary in which the served his sentence. Over a hundred years later, strangers visit his grave and leave $1.87, for that was the exact amount Stella had left to buy a present for Jim in The Gift of the Magi. The money collected is donated to nearby libraries. O'Henry would have liked that.
