a postscript: 1990s american manufacturing was a wreck: high union costs, inefficient shipping. 

well. those factories closed. those unions are gone. and amazon hired XXXXXXX delivery vans. 

i think its been accepted gospel for ~30 years that no one can make american manufacturing work. that was true for american manufacturing XXX - i remain TBD on the musk model: lean factories, short supply lines, efficient delivery.
