Seriously. It was called the Difficulty Bomb, and its job? “Make mining harder and harder over time, until the chain basically froze.” Sounds wild, right? But there was a reason. Ethereum needed to move to Proof of Stake. And this was its way of saying: “We will upgrade, whether you’re ready or not.” If devs didn’t ship the next upgrade in time, block times would slow to a crawl. Eventually, the network would become unusable. It was delayed multiple times, but in 2022, during The Merge, it finally did its job. The Merge, officially transitioning from PoW to Proof of Stake (PoS). When that happened: •Mining was completely removed from Ethereum. •Validators replaced miners. •The Difficulty Bomb no longer had a role, because there was no more mining to slow down. So, in effect, the Merge made the Difficulty Bomb unnecessary. It had done its job: forcing Ethereum to evolve, and ensuring the switch to a more sustainable, energy-efficient model. Crazy to think the second-biggest blockchain ran with a built-in self-destruct countdown for years. Genius strategy or way too risky? What’s your take? Here’s something most people don’t know…
