Timeline of Relay Chain Evolution (2020–2025)

2020: @Polkadot launched with just the Relay Chain, no parachains yet. DOT staking, transfers, and validator elections went live

2021: Code complete for parachains. Relay Chain now secured bonded slots and coordinated crowdloans

2022: XCM and governance matured. But the Relay Chain still had a 12s block time and limited parallelism

2024: The real breakthrough:
→ Asynchronous Backing deployed
→ Relay Chain throughput increased up to 8x
→ Block time dropped to 6s

This massive scalability upgrades at the base layer (5/6)
