Sacred promise,?  It was instituted when the avg life span was well below the threshold to collect.  My mom died two years into collecting.  Her money went back into the pot.  Had the social security collected been placed in an investment fund she would have been a lot better off and the mo ey she earned would have  gone to her family.  SOCIAL security is a Ponzi Scheme at best.  It was originally based as a money grab by the government.
