You can defend yourself, but you can't use a prohibited weapon, in this case, a non-lethal weapon like pepper spray to defend yourself.

Of course, you can use reasonable force to defend yourself.  I could have been clearer, sorry.  What constitutes reasonable force turns on the facts and circumstances.  So you can use your body or something that isn't a prohibited weapon under the Weapons Act to defend yourself.

Anyone versed in the law and doesn't want to break it has a cricket bat beside their bedside table.  Sporting equipment is lawful to possess and you will have plausible deniability using it so long as you do not admit to police you specifically possessed it for self defence.

Confusing? Yes.
