Let us take as an example the attitude of a waiter in a café.

He is not what he is.
But he plays at being a waiter in order to escape the responsibility of what he is in truth—a free being, condemned to invent himself at every moment.

He is in bad faith.
He is trying to escape what he cannot escape: his freedom, his ability to choose, his consciousness of being more than his role.

He wants to be a thing, like a rock or a table, with a fixed essence.
But the truth is: man is nothing else but what he makes of himself.
He is free—and in that freedom lies his anguish.

There is no divinely scripted essence, no grand design, no final cause.
Existence precedes essence: you are not born with a purpose—you create it.
And that is terrifying.
But also: it is your one great power.
