One reason many people can't let go of the TDS they developed over the last XX years is because they've been programming themselves to believe they're stopping someone who was truly evil and corrupt; they were on the side of the angels, the right side of history, etc.

Once that illusion is allowed to fade away...they have a lot of soul searching to do about what's been done to this country in the name of 'stopping Trump' over the past decade. 

This is why some people put so much mental energy into maintaining the illusion.  If you're fighting 'literal Hitler', then anything you did was justified.  If not?  

The awful realization begins to hit you.
