Let’s take a look at the supposed “McShanahan tree”

McVay and Shanahan both got their first pro jobs working for Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay. Gruden got his start in 1990 in San Francisco under George Seifert. Seifert also got his first job in San Francisco under Bill Walsh. Walsh first worked for Al Davis in the AFL in Oakland, and Al Davis was an assistant first under Sid Gillman in LA for the Chargers in 1960. So, in reality, it’s the Gillman tree.
