American leftist visits China, praises lack of homelessness. He does not know that the Chinese Communist Party operates a vast internal border control/household registration system whereby hundreds of millions in the desperately poor countryside are subject to lives of extreme precarity if they try to move to wealthy first world cities like Shanghai without the right hukou permit. If they try to move they are treated like illegal immigrants because the “hukou” system grants social welfare, health, and educational benefits to citizens based on where people are born. Chinese authorities regularly internally deport people without the right hukou permits. They hold massive “clean up campaigns” where they mass evict people without the right internal permits
