There’s nothing at all strange about the idea that there might have been human civilizations of one kind or another before the last 5000 years. Gobekli Tepe may very well have been the creation of an early Holocene civilization given other finds in the region. Plus, most of the areas which would have been perfect for building something like a civilization during the Pleistocene are now underwater (coastlines, but Sundaland in particular) or inside of what is today the Sahara, and very little has been done in these areas to look for a civilization.

We also need to expand our conception of what constitutes a civilization. For example, we should assume that any Pleistocene civilization wouldn’t have had metallurgy based on ice cores, and there’s a decent shot that even writing might not have played a part.

One could imagine a civilization which relied entirely on some combination of memorization and tactile/auditory/visual stimuli in order to rely vast quantities of information— this is a technique that was used by intellectuals in the Gulags, using prayer ropes to write entire manuscripts within their own minds; one could imagine a similar technique having independently developed in a pre-writing world at some point.
