He has had to carry a crazy burden of attacking responsibility since he stepped into the door, but we are finally supporting him (in a way Hazard deserved). Palmer was often tasked with being our killer further up the pitch, our premium creator & having to drop deep etc. A true 1-man attacking machine. In Simons, Jordan will have his Pippen. The “double #10” dream is finally coming to light. They will be a serious 2-man step next season. Two bold, exciting, daring mentality-monsters who were always born for the headlines. They cover for each other so well. Palmer isn’t the best at receiving between the lines when things are super centrally. He often ends up having to drift out wide or deeper outside the block to receive. Simons is the opposite. Excellent between the lines & in smaller space, able to connect the midfield/attack and combine with others. The “glue” as Carney crucially was for us in those opening 1/2 games in 23/24. This allows Palmer to stay higher up & closer to goal, focusing on being the killer he is in the final third. He can also approximate Palmer/Gallagher to an extent and do more of the off-ball dirty work. Similarly as touched on, Simons isn’t a premium traditional #10 like others. Being “the guy” on his own is a step too far. Palmer is the perfect man to cover for that with his devastating attacking threat in all facets. Palmer is the efficient attacking killer machine (Jordan) while Simons handles the nitty-gritty, dropping-deep, getting on the ball looking to run things in tandem with the double-pivot etc (Pippen). Maresca has his modern/complete double #10 partnership that epitomise everything you want from the modern-attacker. Taller, long-limbed #10 + explosive/PNP controller #8. The new age of footballer.
