Zimbabwe is making slow, steady progress towards greater value addition, which means up the value chain of its mineral resources, in this case platinum. The goal of the full domestication of all value chains of our minerals. Seen together with steady progress in the lithium sector, a whole new strategy and programme of action emerges with clear lineaments. The solar project marks a new thrust in enhancing national power generation where both public and private entities join hands, and on renewables. In other jurisdictions, a miner or any major user of power is required to provide a power generation strategy, alongside his or her main project so greenfield projects grow in tandem with increased energy generation capacity. While we are yet to get to that requirement, Zimplats has shown that this is both feasible and good business. The old approach of dedicated power lines simply meant dedicating scarcity, in the absence of investments in new generation capacity.
