Tobacco Use Linked to Higher Depression and Anxiety

A new study shows adolescents who use e-cigarettes, conventional tobacco, or both are more likely to report depression and anxiety symptoms than peers who don’t use any tobacco.

Researchers analyzed survey data from over XXXXXX U.S. middle and high school students collected between 2021 and 2023.

About one in five students reported using tobacco products, with nearly X% using both types.

Those who used both e-cigarettes and conventional tobacco had the highest odds of mental health struggles.

While the study cannot confirm cause and effect, the association between tobacco use and poor mental health is clear.

The authors stress the need for tailored interventions supporting adolescent mental health and reducing tobacco use.
