As one who grew up in that era and actually paid rent for a while, I can say you are XXX% correct.

I graduated high school in 1980 and worked as a dishwasher in the Boston area for $3.25/hr, which was either minimum wage or close to it. That came to about $XXX a month at XX hours but I was working 50-55 hours during that time so with OT, it was closer to $900/mo.

I moved into an apartment with a co-worker and split the rent, of which my share was $XXX. I actually could have paid the entire $XXX rent with the money I was making, but I was XX so I wanted extra money for my fun too!

That same Boston area apartment today would be around $XXXXX which is utterly out of reach for anybody making the $15/hr minimum wage today.
