It looks like we might finally have some clarity on who'll be taking over as our new sporting director. All signs are pointing to Ross Wilson, currently the chief football officer at Nottingham Forest, as the top pick for the role.

We've been on the hunt for Paul Mitchell's replacement for a bit now, and while names like Jason Ayto (ex-Arsenal) were in the mix, it's widely expected that Wilson will be offered the job, according to Chris Waugh.

What makes him a strong contender? Well, for starters, the 41-year-old reportedly has a great relationship with Eddie Howe. That's a big plus, especially since Howe himself is involved in this decision, alongside the PIF and James Reuben. The PIF has apparently had their eye on Wilson for years, even back when he was at Rangers (2019-2023). During his time there, Rangers snagged their first league title in a decade and even made it to the Europa League final – impressive stuff!

Wilson also played a part in getting Forest back into Europe for the first time in XX years last season. So, he's clearly got a knack for getting clubs moving in the right direction. This move to Newcastle would be another step up in his career, which started at Falkirk and includes stints at Watford, Huddersfield, Southampton, and Rangers.

What's really appealing about Wilson is his reputation for building a strong club culture and the kind of infrastructure that truly supports a manager. That sounds like a perfect fit for Eddie Howe, who, as we all know, is very hands-on with recruitment and all things football.

Just a heads-up, though: no official approach has been made to Nottingham Forest, yet.

The sporting director spot has actually been empty since Paul Mitchell left on June 30th, less than a year after he took over from Dan Ashworth. Since then, Steve Nickson (head of recruitment) and Andy Howe (assistant head of recruitment) have been holding down the fort on transfers.

This potential offer to Wilson comes at a time when there are quite a few changes happening behind the scenes at our club. Our CEO, Darren Eales, is currently serving his notice after a blood cancer diagnosis. And on that front, David Hopkinson, who used to be an executive at Real Madrid, is one of the top names being considered for the new chief executive role.

What do you make of Ross Wilson potentially coming to St. James' Park?
