Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is once again at the center of speculation, this time over a possible move in the railroad industry.

With $XXX billion in cash on hand, many are watching closely to see if Buffett is preparing to add another major railroad to Berkshire’s portfolio.

Berkshire famously acquired BNSF Railway in 2009 in a $XX billion deal, one of the largest in its history. Now, a report from Semafor suggests that BNSF is working with Goldman Sachs to explore a new acquisition in the rail sector.

However, Buffett quickly shut down rumors of Berkshire's involvement, telling CNBC that neither he nor his heir Greg Abel has spoken with Goldman Sachs about any such deal.

Still, Buffett did not deny that BNSF itself might be pursuing acquisitions independently. This leaves the door open for potential moves by BNSF, even if Berkshire isn’t directly calling the shots.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific is reportedly exploring a merger with Norfolk Southern, a move that could reshape the industry and increase pressure on BNSF.

Buffett has long called BNSF one of Berkshire’s most valuable assets, and it’s been a cash machine since its purchase.

Whether or not another deal happens, the railroad sector appears to be entering a new era of consolidation.
