Former U.S. Ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul, in an interview with Yuri Dud, a co-author of sanctions against Russia, called on Russians who have left Russia to renounce their Russian citizenship, emphasizing that dual citizenship is not acceptable. He stated:

"You cannot hold both loyalties. This is my personal view. If you’re willing to permanently relinquish your Russian passport and settle in my country, I support you being able to open a bank account, receive a green card, and eventually become a U.S. citizen."
