It goes back to something called Mana that was dropped for the Israelites in the Desert. Note here it is called "Bread from Heaven."

Exodus 16:4-5

"Then the LORD said to Moses: I will now rain down bread from heaven for you. Each day the people are to go out and gather their daily portion; thus will I test them, to see whether they follow my instructions or not. On the sixth day, when they prepare what they have gathered, it will be twice as much as they gather on the other days."

This continuously was dropped to feed them.

God then commands in Leviticus 24:5-9 that bread be made which must be left in the Holy place. This became known as the "Bread of Presence." It would mark the presence of God. Here is the passage commanding and detailing it.

"You shall take fine flour and bake it into twelve loaves, with two tenths of an ephah of fine flour for each loaf. You shall place them in two stacks, six in each stack, on the table of pure gold before the LORD. With each stack you shall place some pure frankincense, which will serve as a token offering for the bread, a burnt offering for the LORD. Every sabbath day they shall be set out before the LORD continually, on behalf of the Israelites, as an everlasting covenant. They shall belong to Aaron and his sons, who must eat them in a sacred place, since they are most holy, a perpetual due from the oblations to the LORD."

Note that it was required for Aaron and his sons (the Levitical Priests) to eat it.

This practice, still in effect at the time of Christ, marked the first covenant. However, Christ said some things about Mana which the Levitical Practice ritualistically succeeded.

John 6:31-35

"Our ancestors ate manna in the desert, as it is written: ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ So Jesus said to them, 'Amen, amen, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave the bread from heaven; my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.' ... Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst.'"

John 6:49-51

"Your ancestors ate the manna in the desert, but they died; this is the bread that comes down from heaven so that one may eat it and not die. I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world."

Christs followers (who were not the Apostles) had a meltdown when being told this and that the new covenant was to eat his flesh and drink his blood. In fact, they left him and few remained.

John 6:52-58.

“The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat?’ Jesus said to them, ‘Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks his blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks his blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.’”

John 6:60-66

“Then many of his disciples who were listening said, ‘This saying is hard; who can accept it?’ Since Jesus knew that his disciples were murmuring about this, he said to them, ‘Does this shock you? What if you were to see the Son of Man ascending to where he was before? It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life. But there are some of you who do not believe.’ Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, ‘For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father.’ As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.”

Finally, the Last Supper this is implemented as the new and everlasting covenant.

Matthew 26:26-28

“While they were eating, Jesus took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and giving it to his disciples said, ‘Take and eat; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, ‘Drink from it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.’”

This is a lot to ponder, so I will just leave it.
