Mahmoud Khalil, reflecting on his ICE detention last night on Zoom:

“I still remember at that time, the LA protests happening. You can see the whole dorm standing in front of the TV… got that hope that people are awakening—that they are seeing the injustices happening against them.”

Khalil says what kept him going in detention was watching the 2025 LA Riots on TV with fellow detainees, drawing strength from the unrest.

He calls U.S. detention centers “black holes” and accuses the government of trying to “deprive us from our community” by isolating detainees from their families. He praised the support network that surrounded his pregnant wife during his incarceration—community members who “rotated sleeping over” at their home.

Khalill's worldview is one that romanticizes chaos and sees violence in the streets as moral "awakening."
