Witold Pilecki: The man who fought Nazis was killed by Soviets

The Polish hero Witold Pilecki volunteered to be imprisoned in Auschwitz, gathered evidence of the Holocaust from within, escaped, and kept fighting - first against the Nazis, then against the Soviet occupation.

But in communist-ruled Poland, heroes like him were treated as enemies. The regime arrested, tortured, and executed him in 1948 after a sham trial.

Just like thousands of other soldiers of the Home Army, the Polish underground military resistance organization that fought against Nazi Germany, Pilecki was hunted down by Stalin's puppets and murdered.

Unlike what some people believe, the Soviet communists didn't liberate Poland. They replaced one terror with another.
