I’ve never shouted “Brasília” so many times while watching a movie. Also, I somehow forgot that I had already rewatched this back in 2020—which says a lot about how forgettable it is. Watching lazy knockoffs like I Know What You Did Last Summer and Urban Legend really makes you wonder: was Scream worth all the copycats it spawned? This sequel is a perfect example of the worst kind of post-Scream cash-in. Jennifer Love Hewitt and friends head off to a tropical island, where The Hookman returns to do exactly what all uninspired slasher villains do: kill people with zero flair, build-up, or tension. It’s painfully clear this was rushed into production after the original became a massive hit. None of the original creative team came back, and it shows (not that the first movie is much use). The direction is flat, the writing is lazy, and the setting—while supposedly exotic—adds nothing except a slight visual change from the gloomy small-town vibe of the first film. Jack Black shows up as a dreadlocked stoner, and his performance is aggressively irritating. It feels like a bad sketch from an MTV awards show, not an actual character in a horror movie. And honestly, that’s the only thing remotely memorable about this film—and not in a good way. There’s little suspense, no real mystery, and the kills are as dull as the characters. It’s a sequel in the most cynical sense: made purely because the first movie made money, with none of its already limited charm. I'll go into its sequel tonight with an open mind, but there really isn't a high bar for it to jump to be the best entry of the franchise.
