Alexander E., a repeat offender, terrorized women in Russia’s Chelyabinsk region: he tracked victims on social media, waited by their apartment buildings, broke into their homes, and raped them at knifepoint. At least seven such assaults were confirmed. The manhunt lasted seven full years.

He was finally caught in November 2023, and the case went to trial in July 2024. A 20-year sentence seemed inevitable.

But no — just two days after the case reached court, he signed a military contract. The court dropped his arrest and suspended the case.

If he survives, he won’t return as a convict — but as a “hero.” This is what Russia’s new elite looks like.
