He then joined Drum Magazine in 1957 after his reporting attracted the attention of Sylvester Stein of Drum Magazine. In 1963 he founded a quarterly literary magazine called 'The Classic'. Nakasa was accepted for the 1965 intake of the Nieman Fellowship, a journalism program at Harvard University. He applied for a passport & was refused & had to accept the exit permit instead, a one way ticket into exile. After completing his Fellowship, Nakasa seemed homesick. Unable to return to South Africa, he became depressed. On XX July 1965, Nat Nakasa died by suicide when he jumped from his friend's seventh-storey apartment.
