THE UNIBANK CASE… summary

In February 2020, the state charged Dr. Kwabena Duffour (Unibank founder and Fmr. Finance minister), Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama (Fmr. Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, now Governor of BOG), Kwabena Duffour II and others. They faced XX criminal charges, including fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering conspiracy and causing financial loss to the state, following the collapse of Unibank which had accumulated debts of approximately GHS XXX billion.

The prosecution alleged that Kwabena Duffour II and UniBank’s chief Operating officer, Ekow Dadzie-Dennis funneled large sums into related companies and fabricated loan transactions to inflate the bank’s income and conceal illicit transfers.

Dr. Asiama, meanwhile was accused of unlawfully approving a GHS 300M facility for the Bank despite being aware of its distressed financial condition. No public or specific statement has been found on Johnson Asiama in the UniBank case.

In May 2025, the Attorney General issued a Nolle Prosequi, thus discontinuing the case against Duffour and X others including Johnson Asiama.

The AG cited that the accused had met the recovery threshold (recovering a significant portion of the alleged losses, reportedly 60%) after negotiations with relevant state agencies.

Are we to sit by and watch while public officials misuse taxpayers money and later be allowed to negotiate partial refunds without full accountability? Should individuals entrusted with public funds be given opportunity to determine how much they can return and how much they retain? Is this the standard we wish to set for our nations governance and future?

As citizens, we must remain vigilant and demand transparency, integrity and justice in the management of our public resources. 🇬🇭 💔
