To calm nerves, the government plans to build an emergency gas reserve starting in 2026 - because nothing screams “we’ve got this” like prepping for panic two years from now. Import reliance is up, domestic production is down, and EU gas traders are sweating harder than a boiler in January. The Netherlands says it’s totally fine on gas ahead of winter - even though storage is at its lowest level for this time of year since 2021.
Blame the fallout from Russian gas sanctions, which forced Europe to scramble for alternatives and drove prices and supply chains into chaos.
Traders aren’t buying it, watching Dutch reserves lag behind France, Italy, and Austria. Bergermeer, the country's biggest site, is only XX% full.
