The worst liquidations happen when the typical underwater noob says: "Fuck it, now I'm going to use 3x leverage, relatively low and safe, and forget about it, that way I'll make my money back." It won’t be the guy using 200x or more leverage in front of the monitor to catch small moves who gets liquidated. In the end, there’s no real difference, but low leverage makes you complacent if you're day trading and don’t have perfect risk management. High leverage with isolated positions doesn’t do that. There was a great post by hearthereum, or was it delta xbt blog that talked exactly about this. Leverage is never the problem. In my opinion, low leverage is actually more dangerous, because when you open a high-leverage position, you think XXX times about where your invalidation point is and how much money you're going to lose. How many times have you opened a 5x without even thinking about the stop loss? Probably a lot.
