The head of the authority is nominated by the government and approved by a simple majority in parliament, meaning Fidesz hand-picks the leadership.

Its annual reports go to parliament, which is again fully controlled by Fidesz. There’s no parliamentary opposition oversight that can actually do anything about what the authority reports.

It cannot initiate criminal investigations, only refer cases to institutions that already do nothing, like the prosecution office run by Orbán’s old college buddy, Péter Polt, or his successor.
