Just been walking with a friend staying from a 'very' small South Island town. She knows of two houses that are now vacant because they don't meet the regulatory criteria for renting. An owner can live in them, they're fine, have log burners and heat pumps, but not enough insulation to be a rental anymore. One of them, a small house, was last rented for just $XXX a week.

Now multiply that across New Zealand.
