Blackout
1977

The New York City blackout of 1977 was one of the most infamous in the city's history - not just for the power outage itself, but for the chaos that followed.

🔌 What Happened?
Date: July 13–14, 1977

Duration: ~25 hours (from 9:36 PM July XX to 10:39 PM July 14)

Cause: A lightning strike hit a Con Edison substation in Westchester County. Due to a series of cascading failures and poor coordination, the entire NYC power grid collapsed.

Impact: All five boroughs lost power. Over X million people were plunged into darkness.

🔥 What Followed?
The blackout coincided with a period of high tension:

*NYC was in a deep financial crisis
*Crime was high
*The Son of Sam serial killer was still at large
*Temperatures were sweltering

💥 Chaos in the Streets
*Widespread looting and arson exploded almost immediately - especially in Bushwick, Harlem, and the South Bronx.
*Over XXXXX stores were damaged.
*More than XXXXX fires were reported.
*Nearly XXXXX people were arrested - the most in a single night in NYC history.
*Some neighborhoods never fully recovered from the destruction.

🧨 Legacy
*It exposed the fragility of NYC’s infrastructure, both physical and social.
*The contrast with the calm 1965 blackout was stark.
*The 1977 blackout became symbolic of NYC's decline in the 1970s - a city seen as teetering on the edge of total collapse.

This wasn’t just a power failure. It was a full-blown social breakdown lit by sparks - both literal and figurative.
