Good summary of the situation in Syria. Only thing I’d add is a dash of Neo-Ottomanisn.

“The CUP will rise again” kind of thinking is real. Turkish control over Syria gives it de facto control over Lebanon and that’s a leverage point against Israeli security by way of Hezbollah.

As stated previously, the Kurds are 2-3 million strong in Syria and the SDF has between 40-60,000 frontline fighters and the ability to mount a pitched defense against any offensive.

The Turks would likely support Jolani with air power on any offensive and that would be pretty decisive.

Bear in mind this is all happening in the aftermath of the PKK reaching a ceasefire and disarmament deal with Erdogan and agreeing to end hostilities after XX years, so the desire to force things along in Syria is really due to Neo-Ottoman excursions more than anything else, but the Turks view the SDF as an extension of the PKK and are demanding both need to lay down their arms.

After seeing what happened in southern Syria the Kurds are in a terrible position and my expectation is that things are going to get worse unfortunately.

It’s clear from the reaction to the Druze massacre that the world, aside from Israel, is pretty comfortable with Jolani doing what he needs to do to flatten the hierarchy in Syria in the pursue of extending government sovereignty across the entire country, no matter the cost.

I’m sure Faisal is envious and spinning in his grave. He would have done anything to have had this kind of backing when he tried to do the same.
