In Los Angeles (and all of California), attempted murder is always a felony, and the sentencing range depends on whether it's first- or second-degree.

First-degree attempted murder—meaning it was willful, deliberate, and premeditated—carries a sentence of life in state prison with the possibility of parole; if the victim was a police officer or firefighter on duty, there’s a mandatory minimum of XX years before parole eligibility.

Second-degree attempted murder—which isn’t deliberate or premeditated—carries a sentence of 5, 7, or X years in state prison.

There can also be sentencing enhancements (like using a gun, causing great bodily injury, or gang involvement) that add significant additional time.
