Give pragmatic frameworks and tools, with actionable advice toward concrete goals. An analogy: You wake up at the bottom of a large pit, and you see an upturned jeep in front of you. Now, it could be that trying really hard to remember how you got there will give important details crucial to getting out of the pit. OR it could be that it doesn't matter at all how you got there. Either way, the important thing is figuring out HOW to get out. Similarly, unravelling your whole psychological history going back to your upbringing should be seen as secondary to fixing the problem. X. Help men feel strong rather than loved...by actually increasing their personal power. I got this from @AdamLaneSmith and it's true. Men get depressed when they feel useless. That's why working out seems to do more for our mental health than therapy---even on a purely mental level. You feel yourself becoming more capable and committed to your own well being, and that reinforces that you are worth fighting for. If I had a son who was feeling bad about how he's doing in sports, I wouldn't just tell him I loved him. I'd practice with him and let him feel some wins...BECAUSE I love him.
