That whole Galileo-to-Newton era was a wild time—Galileo pushed the idea that *inertia* is key (bodies want to keep moving unless acted on), and Newton unified that with *gravity* as mass attraction, making both ideas central to physics. 

The debate back then was really about which force or concept could better explain motion, and Newton ended up building on both: inertia (objects resisting changes to motion) and mass attraction (gravity), rather than picking one over the other, which laid the foundation for modern mechanics.

It’s cool to see how these old arguments echo today, but both inertia and gravity turned out to be fundamental, not mutually exclusive!
